A row of urban vernacular buildings *machiya 町家, directly facing the street at the front of a deep urban plot in Kyoto in the Edo period. The buildings were usually of two storeys, with storage lofts *tsushi nikai 厨子二階 while the lower floor served as a shop or office *mise 店. At one end of the facade was a main entry *oodoguchi 大戸口, leading to an earth-floored area *doma 土間, occuping the *shimote 下手, end of the interior. The main mise area was floored. A pair of sliding doors *nakado 中戸, at the rear of the doma gave access to a small courtyard. | ||||||
