okiya 置屋 | ||||||
KEY WORD : architecture / folk dwellings
The houses of procurers keeping teams of yuujo 遊女, female entertainers and prostitutes in the authorised pleasure districts *yuukaku 遊廓, of cities in the Kansai 関西 region during the Edo period. The women were sent to *ageya 揚屋 to entertain clients with dancing, music, and gaming. Similar to the *yuujoya 遊女屋 of eastern Japan, except that, because the ageya survived to the end of the Edo period in the Kansai region, the okiya never developed a public reception suite.
