nurigome-zukuri 塗篭造 | ||||||
KEY WORD : architecture / general terms
A generic term for the process used to build a fire-resistent wall. Typically the wooden structural frame is entirely covered with a layer of mud daub, *tsuchikabe 土壁, and plaster, *shikkui 漆喰. Both *nuriya-zukuri 塗屋造 and *dozou-zukuri 土蔵造 are examples of this type of construction. In a castle, the process not only prevents fire but also offers protection from bullets. One example is found in the top floor of Himejijou 姫路城, Hyougo prefecture.. The process was also used in the night chamber, *nurigome 塗篭, in some shinden style residences *shinden-zukuri 寝殿造 constructed during the Heian period.
