KEY WORD : architecture / general terms
A ceremony performed before a thatched roof, *kayabuki yane 茅葺屋根, is hid. Originally a carpenter carried out the ceremony but at an unknown time, a Shinto priest became responsible for performing the ritual. At Ise Grand Shrine, Ise Jinguu 伊勢神宮 in Mie prefecture, when the main sanctuary *shouden 正殿 is rethatched, a gift is first offered to the deity, Yafune-no-kami 屋船神. Then a shrine official responsible for the construction, followed by craftsmen and roof thatchers, lay thatch on the end of the south eave.
