nokimarugawara 軒丸瓦
KEY WORD : architecture / rooling tiles

A semi-cylindrical or half-round eave-end pendant tile. The pendant *gatou 瓦当, is a circular disk attached to a half-round tile *marugawara 丸瓦, which covers the joints where broad concave tiles *hiragawara 平瓦, meet. In order to prevent rainwater from seeping between and under the roofing tiles and roof sheathing, the marugawara and hiragawara at the eave edge are finished with slightly slanted borders composed of circular pendant tiles, nokimarugawara, alternating with concave rectangular pendant tiles *nokihiragawara 軒平瓦, to form a symetrically decorative finish along the ends of the eaves.
