2 A short, wooden, wall-like fringe suspended from an outer eave end of a traditional Japanese building between the square posts that reach from ground level to the bottom of the rafters. The posts are secured by a tie beam from which the noki-ita are hung. Noki-ita are used to prevent snow or rain from blowing in under the eaves. They are used on vernacular houses *minnka 民家 in the northern part of Japan and in some mountainous districts where snowfall is very heavy. Example: Hikosan Jinja Houheiden 英彦山神社奉幣殿 (1617), Fukuoka prefecture. Also called noren-ita 暖簾板; tsurigangi 吊雁木; taregangi 垂雁木; mae-ita 前板; auchi あうち; or mizukiri 水切.
