nerimono 練物
KEY WORD : art history / sculptures

A modelling material resembling *kokuso-urushi 木屎漆 but harder in quality. Thought to be a mixture of an oil-based component and a clay-like substance, but its composition is not known. Used for hair, pupils of eyes, decorations and armor on Chinese Buddhist statues of the T'ang and Sung dynasties. An example is the Tobatsu Bishamontenzou 兜跋毘沙門天像 in Touji 東寺, Kyoto, thought to have been made in the late 8-early 9c.
