The inner sanctum located in the main halls *kondou 金堂 or *hondou 本堂 of a Buddhist temple, or *honden 本殿 of a Shinto shrine. It can occupy part or all of the core *moya 母屋 of the building. It is central in a group of temple buildings. In shrines the entire honden consists of one small interior space all or part of which may be called the naijin. In both temples and shrines the naijin contains the statue of a deity or the venerated god-essence. | ||||||
