Lit. peeping bridge. A type of arched, wooden garden bridge that ends abruptly in the water just after beginning its downward curve. From the end of the bridge the remaining area of water is crossed by stepping stones *tobi-ishi ςΞ placed in shallow water sawatari ςn. The nozokibashi, built to resemble a decayed bridge, is the ultimate expression of the artificial rusticity prized in many Edo period gardens. The term is found in ISHIGUMI SONOU YAEGAKI ΞgΆͺd_ (1827) by Akizato Ritou H’βί. | ||||||
