munekazari　棟飾り

A generic name for the ornaments added to the ridge of a thatched or wooden roof to protect the roof-ridge, and to symbolize the social status of the inhabitants. There are two main types: ornaments made from forked or crossed timbers; or ornaments made from a bunch of grasses known as *kaya 茅 covering the seams of the ridge capping, *munazutsumi 棟包, or made by covering the whole ridge with rough bamboo or reed matting, su 簀, and tree bark. Depending on the region, the first type are also known as karasu 烏, karasuodoshi 烏おどし, *karasudomari 烏止まり, *karasuodori 烏踊り, *karasutobi 烏鳶, suzumedomari 雀止まり, suzumeodoshi 雀おどし, *suzumeodori 雀踊り, ondori おんどり, kura 鞍, kuragi 鞍木, kurahone 鞍ほね, kurakake 鞍掛, nikura 荷鞍, matagi 又木, osae 押え, uma 馬, umanomata 馬の又, umanori 馬乗り, kigire 木ぎれ, tsumegi つめ木, or hotegi ほて木; and the second type are known as mewara 女藁, hote ほて, bote ぼて, sabote さぼて, kako かこ or suboke すぼけ.
