monkaburi 門冠
KEY WORD : architecture / gardens

Lit. gate crowning. A tree planted by a garden gate so that its branches extend over the gate. In some cases the branches are trained to grow parallel with the top of the gate. In the Kantou 関東 region the red pine akamatsu 赤松 is used, while the black pine kuromatsu 黒松 is common in the Kansai 関西 region. The gate crowning pine is meant to give a sense of volume to the small entry gardens tsuboniwa 坪庭 as well as to provide a visual contrast between the rough, green and three-dimensional pine and the smooth, brown and two-dimensional gate.
