| A temporary
building for housing the deity at Ise Jinguu 伊勢神宮, during the
Heian and Kamakura periods. During the rebuilding of shrine structures,
about every twenty years, it was necessary to provide a temporary shelter
for the deity. However, from 1482 to 1558 when Japan was torn by civil wars,
the usual reconstruction with accompanying ceremonies were completely abandoned.
Today mokedono are not constructed at Ise. Probably construction
had ceased by the end of the Muromachi period. |
