| 1 A
pictorial subject taken from the "The Wind in the Pines" Matsukaze, Chapter
18 of GENJI MONOGATARI 源氏物語 (The Tale of Genji). In this chapter,
Genji installs the Akashi Lady (see *Akashi
明石) in the capital and they decide that the girl born to them (later Empress
Akashi) will be adopted and raised by Murasaki 紫 (see *Wakamurasaki
若紫), because of the Akashi Lady's low provincial status. Scenes chosen for
illustration include: Genji, on his way back to the Katsura 桂 villa; parting
from his baby daughter and the Akashi Lady; and an open-air banquet at Katsura,
where Genji is offered small game-birds tied to autumn reeds. See *genji-e
源氏絵. 2 Pictorial subject matter taken from a *nou 能 play of the same name by Kannami 観阿弥 (1333-84) that treats the exile of Ariwara no Yukihira 在原行平 (818-93) to Suma 須磨, because of his purported affair with two sisters, Matsukaze and Murasame 村雨. See *Shiokumi 汐汲み. |
