mashi 増 | ||||||

A gradual increase in the height of such structual members as rafters *taruki 垂木, eave supports *kayaoi 茅負, or flying rafter supports *kioi 木負. This method of construction is expressed as mashi-wo-tsukeru 増を付ける, or mashi-ga-aru 増がある. If the rafter curves upward as it widens, this is called sorimashi 反増. The system of mashi has existed since the 8c. | ||||||
