madori 間取 | ||||||
KEY WORD : architecture / general terms
A floor plan. The arrangement of rooms in a dwelling, including access points, windows, hallways, verandas, toilet and bathing facilities. This term was used especially when plans, madori-zu 間取図, were being drawn for shoin style *shoin-zukuri 書院造, mansions, and vernacular houses *minka 民家. However, because a true Japanese dwelling has few immovable walls, the function of a space can be changed easily to accommodate even unexpected needs. Therefore, in planning, each area would be assigned a function with the knowledge that it was temporary rather than fixed. The planning of inns, especially officially designated inns, *honjin 本陣, had to consider of lodging a lord and his retainers based on rank.
