Lintel, header or head jamb. Also magosa まごさ. A lintel without grooves or tracks, placed horizontally at the top of a gate or the door or window. The lintel is attached to posts on each side of the opening by a tenon *hozo ほぞ and mortise *hozoana ほぞ穴. Used to hang the door or to set the window, the magusa also carries the weight of a wall above, or helps to prevent the warping of posts. | ||||||
