Lit. paring down. The *ukiyo-e 浮世絵 woodblock carving process which reduces the thickness of the outlines on the block copy *hanshita 版下. Many of the lines drawn on the block copy prepared by an artist for a woodblock print will in practice be much thicker than is desirable on the finished print. This is particularly true in the case of faces. It is left up to the engraver as to whether he follows the left-hand side, the right-hand side or the middle of any given line when carrying out this paring down process.
