KEY WORD : art history / sculptures | ||||||
Lit. fist. Transliteration of the Sanskrit musti. A mudra or hand gesture *in
印 in which the hand is clenched to form a fist. The form in which the tip of
the thumb was hidden by the other fingers is called kongouken 金剛拳 (adamantine
fist), while a fist in which the thumb was visible is called rengeken 蓮華拳 (lotus fist). Because it forms the basis of many mudras, considerable importance
is attached to it in Esoteric Buddhism, and it is counted among the mother mudras, inmo 印母. But it is seldom found in actual images or paintings. |
