|  Coping tiles. Tiles used to cover the top of a fence 
or wall to prevent weathering. The fences may be made of wood, bamboo or mud plaster 
and surfaced with white plaster. The arrangement of the tiles varies: a simple 
row of semi-circular tiles; an elaborate arrangement of one or two rows of pantile 
*sangawara 桟瓦 or individual 
broad, concave tiles *hiragawara 
平瓦; or semi-circular, convex cover tiles *marugawara 
丸瓦 bordered on the outer edge with a row of eave-end tiles *nokisakigawara 
軒先瓦 with pendants *gatou 瓦当
