|  Lit. 
dry waterfall. A common technique in dry landscape *karesansui 
枯山水 in which a symbolic waterfall is made with an arrangement of stones. Typically 
the waterfall is represented by standing the bluestone, ao-ishi, 青石 lengthwise 
to symbolize the cascade. At the foot of this some gravel or white sand is placed 
to make a dry stream *karenagare 
枯流. Good examples are found in gardens at Saihouji 西芳寺,  Daisen-in 大仙院 at Daitokuji 大徳寺 both in Kyoto, Toukouji 東光寺 in Ymanashi 
prefecture, and the old Ni-no-maru 二之丸 at 
Nagoyajou 名古屋城 in Aichi prefecture.  |
