kanshiki 款識
KEY WORD : art history / paintings

Correctly read kanshi かんし. Connoisseurship. Originally referred to engraved inscriptions on Chinese bronzes, but today the term is used synonymously with kantei 鑑定 to refer to paintings and calligraphy. Kanshiki has a strong nuance which emphasizes the importance of the critic's intuitive judgement over other methods or qualifications. Judgement on the basis of seals and signatures alone is termed rakusei kanshiki 落成款識.
