Wudi (159-87 BC). The literary Emperor Wu of Han. The seventh emperor of
the Former Han (Jp: Zenkan 前漢), who ruled from 141-87 BC. Many well-known,
Chinese historical figures were pulled into his political and cultural orbit,
including Su Wu (Jp: So Bu 蘇武) and Li Ling (Jp: Ri Ryou 李陵; see *So
Ri kestubetsu 蘇李訣別), Zhu Maichen (Jp: *Shu
Baishin 朱買臣), and Dongfang Shuo (Jp:*Toubou
Saku 東方朔). Wudi is associated also with the Queen Mother of the West (Jp: Seioubo 西王母; see *Seioubo Tououfu 西王母・東王父) and
sometimes is included in paintings of her. The emperor was portrayed in
the didactic painting theme Mirror of Good and Bad Emperors *teikan-zu
帝鑑図 and also in formal portraits. One such portrait by Kanou Tan'yuu 狩野探幽 (1602-74)
shows Wudi together with the Queen Mother of the West as well as his minister
Zhang Baifang (Jp: Chou Hakubou 張伯房). |
