Lit. Humble Words on Matters of Painting, a late 18c polemic on painting theory by Kuwayama Gyokushuu ŒKŽR‹ΚF (1746-99). Completed in 1790 under the title of KAIEN HIGEN ŠG‰‘ηΏŒΎ (Humble Words on the Garden of Painting); Kimura Kenkadou –Ψ‘ΊδγδΡ“° (1736-1802) copyread the treatise and published it in 1799 under the new title. In KAIJI HIGEN Gyokushuu seeks to bolster the reform of *nanga “μ‰ζ spearheaded by Gyokushuu's friend Ike no Taiga ’r‘ε‰λ (1723-76). Most notably, Gyokushuu attempts to find a Southern School *nanshuuga “μ@‰ζ of literati artists within Japanese painting tradition, citing Soutatsu @’B (d.ca.1642), Ogata Kourin ”φŒ`Œυ—Τ (1658-1716), Konoe Nobutada ‹ί‰qM›š (1565-1614), and Shoukadou Shoujou Ό‰Τ“°Ίζ (1584-1639) as exemplary artists whose work stands in contrast to the academic Northern School *hokushuuga –k@‰ζ styles of *Kanouha Žλ–μ”h artists. KAIJI HIGEN had a major impact on late nanga painters such as Tanomura Chikuden “c”\‘Ί’|“c (1777-1835). It is published in Sakazaki Tan βθ’R, ed., NIHON GARON TAIKAN “ϊ–{‰ζ˜_‘εŠΟ 1:pp.135-153.
