|  Lit. Humble
      Words on Matters of Painting, a late 18c polemic on painting theory by
      Kuwayama Gyokushuu KRΚF (1746-99). Completed in 1790 under
      the title of KAIEN HIGEN GηΏΎ (Humble Words on the Garden of Painting);
      Kimura Kenkadou ΨΊδγδΡ° (1736-1802) copyread the treatise and published it
      in 1799 under the new title. In KAIJI HIGEN Gyokushuu seeks to bolster
      the reform of *nanga
      μζ spearheaded by Gyokushuu's friend Ike no Taiga rελ (1723-76). Most notably,
      Gyokushuu attempts to find a Southern School *nanshuuga
      μ@ζ of literati artists within Japanese painting tradition, citing Soutatsu
      @B (d.ca.1642), Ogata Kourin φ`υΤ (1658-1716), Konoe Nobutada ίqM (1565-1614),
      and Shoukadou Shoujou ΌΤ°Ίζ (1584-1639) as exemplary artists whose work
      stands in contrast to the academic Northern School *hokushuuga
      k@ζ styles of *Kanouha λμh
      artists. KAIJI HIGEN had a major impact on late nanga painters such
      as Tanomura Chikuden c\Ί|c (1777-1835). It is published in Sakazaki Tan
      βθR, ed., NIHON GARON TAIKAN ϊ{ζ_εΟ 1:pp.135-153. |
