     Guardhouses
for soldiers placed at street corners in Kyoto and Kamakura during the Kamakura
period. The earliest known kagariya was built in Kyoto in 1238. Eventually
there were forty-eight in Kyoto. They were simple 5×3 bay structures with
boarded roofs. A fire was kept burning at night to provide light.
