KEY WORD : architecture / general terms
Kumogata hijiki 雲形肘木. A cloud-patterned bracket arm that is characterized by a somewhat complicated decorative shape. The pattern is thought also to resemble a dragon form. The bracket arm is found only in Nara, on Houryuuji *Kondou 法隆寺金堂, *Chuumon 中門 and *Gojuu-no-tou 五重塔, on the *Tamamushi no zushi 玉虫厨子 and on Hokkiji *Sanjuu-no-tou 法起寺三重塔. The original Hourinji Sanjuu-no-tou 法輪寺三重塔 also had this type of bracket arm and this is employed on the newly reconstructed pagoda.
