koyane 小屋根

Lit. a small roof. A small roof built over a shed or subordinate structure attached to a main building. Examples include a separate roof over a veranda, or a pent roof around the first or more stories of a building (like a pagoda, *tou 塔) until the top story is reached and covered with the main roof. The small pent roof that surrounds the first story of a vernacular dwelling is also called koyane. The large main roof above the upper story is called ooyane 大屋根. A small raised roof over the smoke vent in a vernacular dwelling is another example of koyane.
