Lit. treasures of the nation. The appellation has existed since the Meiji period, but currently applies to artefacts which are covered by the 1950 Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties, Bunkazai Hogohou 文化財保護法. This law states that it exists to protect articles regarded as especially important treasures of the people of Japan.
