kekomidoko 蹴込床

A simple style alcove *tokonoma 床の間 with a riser board kekomi-ita 蹴込板 notched into a baseboard yose 寄. This baseboard has an inverted notch on the top to support the alcove's extended floor. There is no sill and no frame. If the *tatami 畳 mat and the alcove floor are on the same level, it is called *fumikomidoko 踏込床. The baseboard also forms a solid boundary for the tatami. Bamboo, or split log can be substituted for an ordinary baseboard.
