kasane-umadashi 重馬出
KEY WORD : architecture / castles

Multiple barriers *umadashi 馬出, erected or naturally occurring which serve to screen and protect a castle entrance. These barriers were generally placed one in front of the other. When a castle has no interior walled courtyard gate complex, multiple barriers are erected in their place. These barriers included the ridges of mountain castles and the cliffs of hill castles. A representative example is Konagaijou 小長井城, the castle built by the Takeda 武田 Clan, in Oumi 近江 province, Shiga prefecture.
