Also kariokidana 仮置棚. Lit. boar's eye shelf. A two-tiered shelf *nijuudana 二重棚 attached to a corner of a tea ceremony room *chashitsu 茶室 in or near the service area *mizuya 水屋, for placing things temporarily. The shelf is characterized by a relatively large cut-out in the board between the two shelves, thought to resemble the shape of a boar's eye. The upper shelf is fashioned from a relatively long rectangular piece of wood with one side cut at an angle to create a narrow end. This end extends considerably beyond the vertical board which is positioned between the upper and lower shelves. The vertical board gives support to the upper shelf and is itself resting on the end of the lower shelf. Examples: Saihouji Shounantei 西芳寺湘南亭 (late 16c-17c), Daitokuji Gyokurin-in Sa'an 大徳寺玉林院蓑庵 (early 18c) both in Kyoto.. | ||||||
