Lit. Penglai garden. A general term for a garden focused thematically on Mt. Penglai *Houraisan –H—‰ŽR. This legendary island-mountain of immortals may be expressed through the use of a Penglai stone *houraiseki –H—‰Î, a group of stones representing the Penglai range, hourai renzan iwagumi –H—‰˜AŽRΑg, Penglai boat *houraibune –H—‰M, stone, or a Penglai island *hourai gantou –H—‰Šâ“‡, bearing a stone and a pine. Although these terms are not always used consistently, the thematic focus of hourai teien seems to distinguish it from *hourai youshiki –H—‰—lŽ® (hourai style gardens), where the representation of Mt. Penglai is merely one design element in the garden. | ||||||
