Lit. narrow format. A size of *ukiyo-e
•‚¢ŠG print. The term hosoban is applied to a vertically cut, one-third
portion of three different types of paper. 1@One-third vertically cut sheet of *minogami ”ü”ZŽ†. Approximately 33 X 15-16 cm. Often used for early woodblock prints (the late 17c). Many *beni-e gŠG prints are in this format. A triptych of hosoban prints called hosoban sanchougake ×”»ŽO’šŠ| became popular in the mid-18c. 2@One-third vertically cut sheet of *kobousho ¬•ò‘. Approximately 33 X 15 cm. Frequently used for actor prints *yakusha-e –ðŽÒŠG in the late 18c. 3@Habahiro hosoban�•L×”». Also sometimes called chuutanzakuban ’†’Zû”». One-third vertically cut sheet of chuubousho ’†•ò‘. Approximately 16.6 X 36.4 cm. Examples are found in both *benizuri-e g ŠG and *nishiki-e ‹ÑŠG. |
