|  The topmost member of a three-railed balustrade 
*kouran 高欄, usually round 
or octagonal in section. Although rare, some hokogi are polygonal or hexagonal 
in section. The earliest topmost railings did not have curved ends and were cut 
straight down. From the Heian period they became wider and curved upward 
at the extended ends. During the Edo period  the extended ends were 
cut with an inward slant.  |
