heri-ishi 縁石

Also called *katsura-ishi 葛石. Lit. edging stone. A stone used as a border under eaves. Mainly natural stones 12cm in diameter are used in single or double layers in a straight line. The ground under the eaves is usually hard packed. The edging stones are positioned by leveling string, mizuito 水糸, and then they are lined up accordingly. Sometimes, smaller stones called *gorota-ishi 呉呂太石 (6-10cm diameter round stones) are used as edging.
