Box-shaped measuring tool used when inking
and marking off a pillar in order to fit the horizontal beams surrounding
a ceiling. It is usual in traditional Japanese architecture for pillars
to be exposed to view and not enclosed in a completed wall as a part of
the structural body of the building. The construction of the characteristic
wall surface is produced and the horizontal pieces of timber and ceiling
borders are attached to the pillars. The hakogata jougi is made from
cherry, oak or teak wood. Two pieces of wood measuring approximately 150mm
by 30mm by 6mm are joined at right angle in the long grain direction.
