| Lit.
abolish Buddha. It was government policy during the early Meiji period
to repress Buddhism in favour of Shinto which was promoted as the state
religion. In 1868 the removal of Buddhist influence from Shinto
shrines was decreed, thus reducing a long confluence of religious practice.
Much destruction of Buddhist sites and artefacts ensued, and the resulting
changes in Buddhist practices were of lasting significance. |
