Lit. Penglai garden. A general term for a garden focused thematically on Mt. Penglai *Houraisan 蓬莱山. This legendary island-mountain of immortals may be expressed through the use of a Penglai stone *houraiseki 蓬莱石, a group of stones representing the Penglai range hourai renzan iwagumi 蓬莱連山石組, Penglai boat stone *houraibune 蓬莱舟, or a Penglai island *hourai gantou 蓬莱岩島, bearing a stone and a pine. Although these terms are not always used consistently, the thematic focus of hourai teien seems to distinguish it from *hourai youshiki 蓬莱様式 (hourai style gardens), where the representation of Mt. Penglai is merely one design element in the garden. | ||||||
