| Also houfukuzou @. Lit. portrait in religious (i.e. Buddhist) appearance. A portrait of a person who has taken Buddhist orders and wears Buddhist canonical robes. This term is used for an image of a person who has retired from secular life and entered the priesthood, but it is not used for the portrait of a priest who does not have a previous secular status. The painting by Goushin M made in 1338 of the tonsured Emperor Hanazono Τ (1297-1348) kept at Choufukuji · in Kyoto is a well-known example. In contrast, the term *zokutaizou Μ is applied to the portraits of lay people in formal secular dress. | ||||||
