Pictorial Subject matter of *yamato-e
やまと絵 painting. "The Festival of the Cherry Blossom" Hana-no-en, Chapter 8 of GENJI
MONOGATARI 源氏物語 (The Tale of Genji). Relating the secret affair between Genji
and the sixth daughter of the Minister of the Right, Oborozukiyo 朧月夜 (literally
night of the hazy moon), who was being prepared to be married to the crown prince.
After spending a night together, they exchange fans. Another illustrated scene
from this chapter is in the mansion of the Minister of the Right several months
later at the wisteria festival, when they met each other again. Genji takes her
hand through a crack in the blind and they exchange poems on the misty moon of
spring. |
