genjikou-no-zu 源氏香の図

Also kou-no-zu 香の図. A geometrical design pattern originally symbolizing combinations of incense fragrances. The basic pattern is a rectangle that is divided vertically into five strips, which are connected horizontally in various ways. There are thought to be as many as 5000 versions of this pattern, which is used as a design on transoms *ranma 欄間, and sliding doors *shouji 障子. The genjikou pattern used in the arrangement of muntins on a sliding door is called *koujigumi 香字組.
