Tang dynasty term for rough sketches or underdrawings made with gesso powder
*gofun 胡粉, retraced
with ink. These sketches were often collected into notebooks and used by
later artists for reference or study. 2 Generally, an artist's notes and sketches for a larger painting. Funpon include faithful reproductions of originals as well as rough copies in reduced sizes. Most funpon were produced in ink only *hakubyou 白描, but some include color or color notations. A good example in Buddhist art are *ZUZOUSHOU 図像抄 or collections of iconographic records compiled for the study of Esoteric Buddhism mikkyou 密教. |
