1　A matting made of straw, rushes, sedge or cattails woven in a spiral pattern that was used for bedding, to cover areas of a wooden or earthen floor and as an individual seat. The GARYOU SHOUZOKUSHOU 雅亮装束抄 states that the mats were finished off with different colored bindings and decorated with special patterns that indicated the rank of the people using them: the dainagon's 大納言 mat had a purple chrysanthemum and cloud design, kouraimon 高麗紋; the chunagon 中納言mat had an exquisite border of the kourai pattern *kouraiberi 高麗縁; the saishou 宰相 mat had a lovely yellow kourai pattern. 2　Washers of various shapes based on a circular form, used under the posts of the emperor's or nobleman's bedroom.
