Also written 苑池. Lit. garden pond. The large ponds in gardens of the Nara, Heian and Kamakura periods. Specifically, the ponds in shinden style *shinden-zukuri 寝殿造, Pure Land joudo 浄土 and *banchi ばん池 gardens are referred to as enchi. Representative examples include the garden ponds at Byoudouin 平等院 in Kyoto, Moutsuuji 毛越寺 in Iwate prefecture, and Eihouji 永保寺 in Gifu prefecture. | ||||||
