ensoukou　円相光

Also ensou kouhai 円相光背. A large circular halo *kouhai 光背 found on Buddhist images, particularly *Kokuuzou Bosatsu 虚空蔵菩薩 and *Aizen Myouou 愛染明王. On mandalas the ensoukou surrounds the whole figure, while on statues it frames the head and upper body. The ensoukou encloses smaller halos around the head *zukou 頭光 and body *shinkou 身光. Good examples are the Kokuuzou Bosatsu (late 8-early 9c) in Kakuanji 額安寺, Nara, and the Aizen Myouou (1673) in Chouunji 長雲寺, Nagano prefecture.
