The Edo period Edo branch of the Kanou school of painting *Kanouha Žë–ì”h. The Kyoto branch is called *Kyouganou ‹žŽë–ì. Edoganou includes the highranking painting families known as the *oku-eshi ‰œŠGŽt, as well as lower ranking branches of the Kanou school, such as the *omote-eshi •\ŠGŽt. The term, however, can also refer more specifically to the four branches of the oku-eshi: the Kajibashi Kanou ’b–è‹´Žë–ì; the Kobikichou Kanou –ؔҒ¬Žë–ì; the Nakabashi Kanou ’†‹´Žë–ì; and the Hamachou Kanou •l’¬Žë–ì. These families were the official painters for the shogunate. | ||||||
