KEY WORD : architecture / general terms
The process of spreading clay on the prepared surface of a roof in order to lay roof tiles *hongawara-buki 本瓦葺. Many workers spread the clay and as many tile setters immediately laid the tiles. A reddish brown clay called arakida tsuchi 荒木田土 found in mud fields and marshes along the Arakawa River in Edo was commonly used for this purpose in the Edo period. Because it was a coarse clay, it was good for setting roof tiles.
