dodomezan 土留桟
KEY WORD : architecture / general terms

Also called tsuchidomesan. Narrow timber strips nailed horizontally to roof sheathing *noji-ita 野地板 or to a covering of thin wood shingles *doibuki 土居葺. Clay is then spread into which the roof tiles are set. These strips prevent the clay from sliding off. Furthermore, the tiles are either tied with wire to these strips, or spike-like nails are used to secure them.
