daibutsuyou kibana　大仏様木鼻

Also daibutsuyoukei kibana 大仏様系木鼻. Lit. nosings in the daibutsu style. Incised nosings found on bracket arms, pillars, and tail rafters. Early designs consisted of curved lines and series of arcs. Gradually more elaborate carvings were used, especially animal heads. From the Muromachi period elephant, lion, and peony motifs were very popular. The ornamental nosings were made separately and attached to edge of the member, and so they are also known as *kakehana 懸鼻. Although originally found on daibutsu style architecture *daibutsuyou 大仏様 in the early Kamakura period, incised nosings also became popular on Japanese style buildings *wayou 和様.
