chidori hafu　千鳥破風

Lit. a plover bargeboard. Also written 鵆破風, lit. a trianglular shape. A dormer gable or a dormer bargeboard, or both combined. A dormer bargeboard found on triangular shaped dormers added directly to the slope of a gabled roof surface. They are characterized by strong concave curves. Such dormers have neither windows nor any ventilating capacity, but serve only a decorative purpose.
*Aori hafu 障泥破風 is an almost obsolete term for chidori hafu. Another term, suehafu 据破風 meaning an installed or especially positioned dormer bargeboard is sometimes used. Chidori hafu are also found on castle towers *tenshukaku 天守閣 and castle turrets *yagura 櫓. Example: Kibitsu Jinja *Honden 吉備津神社本殿 (1425), Okayama prefecture
