atari 当り
KEY WORD : architecture / folk dwellings

1 The part of an architectural element in which one member meets another. Different from a joint in that it refers to the place where something abuts something else, or the point of tangency, which is its original meaning. Thus hashiraatari 柱当り would be part of another member, such as a beam, into which the post *hashira 柱, was intended to fit.

2 The projecting part of the point where two members meet. The phrase atari wo toru 当りを取る refers to the process of carefully trimming away excess material around a timber joint so that it corresponds to stipulated dimensions and obtains a precise fit.

3 An approximation: for instance 3m atari means "about 3 meters."
